Over the last several months the team at Playcrafting has been hard at work with our partners at Niantic on the Lightship Global Jam.
This initiative involved 15 teams across the world utilizing Niantic’s Lightship ARDK to build some amazing games and apps in only one week.
To celebrate the recent launch of the Lightship ARDK, we wanted to continue our look back at some of the amazing teams that participated in the Lightship Global Jam in our series called Meet the Devs.
This week’s team is called NekoLogic. They are a multi-talented team based in Japan that can be found jamming in both game development and music (click the video for more of that!)
NekoLogic used the jam week to develop their take on the future of gamified navigation, with an emphasis in engagement with local culture. They took on one of the most impactful features of the ARDK, Semantic Segmentation, to create a truly innovative experience. Take a look!
“Semantic segmentation is a really fancy way of saying “tell me what I’m looking at” – sky, ground, grass, water and so on.
The tech provides a 2d buffer of white pixels, updated per frame for any one of these categories, calculated from the incoming camera data.
We wanted to use this to implement a “Sky UI” to help orientate people in the neighbourhoods and guide them to interesting places, as well as have some kind of effect for emphasizing going into a new neighbourhood.”
