This class is virtual. RSVP via Eventbrite and we will send instructions and appropriate links for you to join via the email you provide per guest in your registration. Instructions will be sent approximately one hour before the event begins.

We all know playtesting is important, but not all tests are created equally. Knowing the right way to make sense of playtester feedback is the difference between a good game designer and a great one. In this class you will learn playtesting techniques that go beyond best practices so you can iterate on your game confidently.

This class will cover:

  • Preparing playtests to set yourself up for success

  • When, why, and how to playtest

  • Who should playtest your game?

  • Data collection tools and analysis

  • Understanding your audience

    Killer focus groups and survey techniques

All attendees will receive a class packet including notes, resources, and exercises upon completion of the class.

Sam is a designer obsessed with how games make meaning. He is a Co-founder and Senior Game Designer at Extra Ludic, where he designs impactful games for organizations at the highest levels of government and civil society. He has created and run workshops on games for real world impact for organizations like the United Nations Development Programme and the MIT Media Lab. As a consultant, he’s designed games for clients such as the U.S. Department of Defense and MIT Lincoln Labs. Additionally, he’s designed a number of award winning party, roleplaying, and tabletop strategy games.

He currently lectures at Northeastern University on the topics of game design and game criticism and theory, and explores ways of spreading knowledge and changing behaviors and outlooks for a safer, more prosperous, and resilient world.
